TBSG Spine Fellowship

The Boston Spine Group Adult Spinal Reconstruction Fellowship

The Boston Spine Group is now accepting applications for spine surgery fellowship training starting on August 1st, 2009 and 2010.

The Boston Spine Group is pleased to announce the commencement of our Spine Fellowship Training program.  The candidates will work closely with four fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeons and two interventional physiatrists and will be exposed to all aspects of adult spine surgery and pain management.  The fellowship candidate will be trained in various surgical techniques including anterior and posterior approaches to the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and conditions including myelopathy, spinal deformity and lumbar degenerative problems.  TBSG commonly participates in IDE studies allowing the fellow to become acquainted with novel techniques and procedures including the use of biologics, disc replacement and other non-fusion devices.  In addition, the fellow will become skilled at minimally invasive techniques for spinal decompression and fusion.

The training program will take place at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and is more than an apprenticeship as the fellow will be an active part of the spine team.  They will have significant responsibilities involving patient care, surgical performance and resident education.  Research requirements will be tailored to the individual candidate but each fellow will be required to actively contribute to new and ongoing projects where expectations for presentation and eventual publication are defined.

The educational program will consist of a weekly didactic lecture series and case conferences among the spine staff.  In addition, dedicated office time for outpatient exposure to preoperative and postoperative patient care will be a mandatory component of the fellowship.

Ultimately, the fellow will gain significant experience with treating complex spinal conditions and will be provided active guidance for future employment positions. By the completion of the 12-month fellowship, we expect the fellow to develop into a well-trained spine surgeon capable of functioning in a university-based or private practice employment, contributing to the spine literature, and taking excellent care of the patient.
